Great Expectations
Spring is full of hope, imagination, and great expectations. Now that we are reasonably sure that Denver’s last frost has passed, everything is greening out. And gardens seem to be popping up everywhere when I walk through my neighborhood. Very cool!
In my yard, the pear tree is adorned with both flowers and nascent pears. The apple tree that was in full bloom last week now has tiny apples forming.
Everywhere I look, the garden is full of promise. Garlic is up and looking strong. Currant flowers are morphing into berries. And most of my garden beds are planted.
Summer Experiments
Spring feels like the start of a whole new adventure. My experiments this year include a pinkish celery and a purplish cauliflower. I also started tomato cuttings from the tomatoes that were under lights all winter and am curious to see how they do. For the first time ever, pumpkins will be in the front yard where they will get lots of morning sun. And of course I am growing flax again this year, as last year was so much fun.
Reminders to Embrace the Now
It’s a time of great expectations. And it is easy to get pulled into dreaming about what comes next – lots of fruits and vegetables by mid summer. As gardeners we can do lots to make that happen. But just like the rest of life, some things are out of our control. Last year a very late hard frost destroyed all the fruit on my apple, pear, and raspberries. So I am keenly aware of how quickly things can change.
It is a great reminder to focus on the beauty and wonder that is in front of me. This moment in the garden is full of new life and the magic of pollination and fruits forming on trees and bushes. And it is all happening in my back yard. I can dwell in that appreciation. Summer will take care of itself.
