Happy New Moon – Thanksgiving Eve – November 23, 2022
Our Thanksgiving table will hold lots of treats from last summer’s harvest. Apples pies from my Liberty apple tree, pumpkin casserole from the Australian Butter Pumpkins, and green tomato pickles. It is a joy to be able to share the garden’s bounty.
I am eternally grateful to have grown up in a gardening family where the understanding that food came from the earth was obvious. And I am thankful for this year’s harvest that keeps providing food as we head into winter. It is easy to be grateful for my garden.
Thanksgiving for the Green World
Whether you are a gardener or not, I hope you’ll direct some of your thanksgiving thoughts to the green world. All of the food on your table is brought into fruition by a multitude of energies and entities. Take a moment to consider this collaborative process – seed, gardener (or farmer), earth, air, sun, water, and many organisms big and small. It is humbling. All players in this process are connected and important as they manifest food for the world.
If you are a gardener, consider how to better nurture the collaborative process. Feeding the soil with compost and covering crops to provide winter mulch are beneficial acts. And there are things to avoid like harmful chemicals on plants or soil. Tending a garden is a way to express gratitude to the earth.
Thanksgiving is More than a One Day Event
The green world that we know began to develop 400 million years ago when algae and fungi made a parternership and moved onto the land. Our fruits, vegetables, flowers, and trees all started from this point. Holding an awareness of this fact makes it easy to be thankful and to extend that thankfulness beyond one day. Our lives are made possible by the life giving gifts of the green world – sustenance, air, beauty, and more. Whatever else you are thankful for, I hope you’ll remember to be thankful for gardens and the green world.
